Our clients wanted to transform their den into a space that is inviting for guests to gather in during visits, while maintaining it's snug and warm feel for TV watching with the family.
We were asked to try and increase the seating capacity in this very small – 10'x12' – room without it feeling stuffy and overcrowded.
It was important the comfortable leather chairs stay put and that we work with the existing carpeting colour as the flooring was to remain.
The last request was for the room to maintain its masculine feel when everything was finished.
The addition of an upholstered loveseat allowed us to instantly double the rooms seating capacity. So, with the makeover complete, the den now seats four very comfortably.
In this tight space we even managed to keep the leather ottoman and add an extra end table. Placing the loveseat on the window wall and flanking it with the leather chairs creates a conversation friendly seating area. The extra end table allowed a spot on either side of the loveseat for guests to place a drink or snack, within comfortable reach. With the addition of a serving tray, the ottoman plays double duty as a coffee table.
The loveseat is upholstered in a green coloured thick plush fabric that will stand up to a lot of use.
The two small windows were treated as one large window with casual single pleat drapery panels. The fabric selected brags a vertical stripe with colours of brown, maroon, gold, cream and green to co-ordinate with the other colours in the space. The panels are mounted on a substantial walnut stained solid wood rod with rings.
Toss cushions were added to play up the coziness of the room. They were sewn with covers that use the two new fabrics incorporated in the space. The striped fabric was used horizontally for the toss cushions and decorative piping was added for extra interest.
Table lamps were added to the end tables so the lighting can be adjusted for any task.
A painting with the colours used in the space was added from the owner's existing collection.
Trays and a wooden bowl were placed on the ottoman as practical accessories.
The finished room is a cozy place for friends or the whole family to gather to talk and watch TV.
